UAE Strengthens Domestic Violence Law – Stricter Penalties

The UAE has introduced Federal Decree-Law No. 13 of 2024, enhancing protections against domestic violence. The law addresses physical, psychological, sexual, and financial abuse, implementing stricter penalties for offenders. Penalties include up to six months in jail and fines up to Dh50,000, with harsher sentences for repeat offenders or cases involving vulnerable individuals. A key provision is the introduction of immediate protection orders, enforceable for 30 days and renewable as needed. Additionally, individuals aware of domestic violence but failing to report it may face fines between Dh5,000 and Dh10,000.

In an interview with The National, I emphasized the importance of both legal and emotional support in addressing domestic violence. The new legislation represents a significant step forward in empowering families by raising awareness and requiring reporting of incidents, thereby reinforcing the protection of survivors.
